With incessant speculation surrounding his Canadian citizenship, Akshay Kumar has issued a public statement on the same. Akshay took to social media to dismiss the “unwarranted interest and negativity” about his citizenship.
Reports had claimed that Akshay was missing from the polling booth on voting day in Mumbai because he is a Canadian citizen. In an earlier statement to TimesNow, Akshay had admitted that he is an honorary citizen of Canada. Akshay had said, “About the Canadian thing, I am an honorary citizen. I’ve been given an honorary thing. I think it’s a thing that people should be proud of. I have an honorary doctorate also but I am not a Doctor. So this is what people have to understand.”
After he failed to cast his vote earlier this week, Akshay was asked why he was missing from the polling booths. The actor dodged the reporter’s query and refused to take any further questions.
The ‘Kesari’ actor took to social media and set the record straight about his citizenship.
Akshay’s statement read: “I really don’t understand the unwarranted interest and negativity about my citizenship. I have never hidden or denied that I hold a Canadian passport. It is also equally true that I have not visited Canada in the last seven years. I work in India and pay all my taxes in India.
“While all these years, I have never needed to prove my love for India to anyone, I find it disappointing that my citizenship issue is constantly dragged into needless controversy, a matter that is personal, legal, non-political, and of no consequences to others.”
“Lastly, I would like to continue contributing in my small way to the causes that I believe in and make India stronger and stronger.”
