From Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi to a film on PM Narendra Modi, biopics seem to be the theme for 2019 based on both recent releases and upcoming Bollywood movies



2018 kicked off with commendable performances by Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, and came to a close with equally engrossing acts in different genres and periods. This year, however, it looks like we’re in for a historical and political ride—with a range of biopics released in the first month itself, and more slotted for later. The Accidental Prime Minister

Release date: January 11, 2019

The Accidental Prime Minister chronicles former prime minister, Manmohan Singh’s life and takes us back to his tenure as the head of the government. Directed by Vijay Ratnakar Gutte, the political drama is a multi-starrer, with Anupam Kher playing the protagonist. The feature has garnered mixed reviews since it hit theatres, and has sparked a political conversation among viewers too.


Release date: January 25, 2019

Abhijit Panse’s Thackeray, created simultaneously in Hindi and Marathi, follows the life of former Indian politician, Balasaheb Thackeray. Set for release on the eponymous character’s 93rd birthday, the film features Nawazuddin Siddiqui in the lead role, along with known faces like Amrita Rao, Rajesh Khera and Sudhir Mishra.

Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi

Release date: January 25, 2019

Narrating the real life story of the 22-year-old warrior queen, Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi, Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi is set to transpose you back to the era of British Raj in India. Kangana Ranaut plays the eponymous character in the self-directed biographical period drama, which also features actors like Ankita Lokhande, Suresh Oberoi, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Atul Kulkarni.

Super 30

Release date: July 26, 2019

Based on mathematician Anand Kumar’s life, this film offers a peek into his journey of launching the innovative educational programme, Super 30which hunts for talent among underprivileged children. The Hrithik Roshan-starrer is the first-ever biographical drama the actor has been a part of. The star cast includes actors Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub and Pankaj Tripathi.

PM Narendra Modi

Release date: unconfirmed

After a long hiatus from celluloid, Vivek Oberoi is all set to the silver screen with PM Narendra Modi, a feature delving into the journey of India’s former chief minister and current prime minister—from his beginnings to his gradual rise up the ladder. Though the star cast and release date are both yet to be announced for this film, reports say that the shooting has recently started.
