How to Use Navigation in Google Maps on iPhone or iPad

To get easy, turn-by-turn navigation to places, use the Google Maps app. Maps will show you directions and use real-time traffic information to find the best route to your destination.

With voice navigation, you’ll hear traffic alerts, where to turn, which lane to use, and if there’s a better route.

Note: Navigation and info about which lane to use aren’t available in all regions and languages.

How to get Google Maps on your iPhone or iPad

Google Maps is an iOS app available in the App Store for free. You don’t have to sign up or subscribe. You can use Google Maps anonymously, or by signing in with your Google account.

How do I sync my Google account to Google Maps?

If you have a Google account (like from Gmail, Hangouts, Google Play, or YouTube), you can sign in with your Google credentials and keep your data synced across all devices you use, including Macs and PCs, windows phones, and Android phones. Depending on what permissions you give, you can save maps you’ve searched for on your computer, get directions to someone in your Contacts, and save favorite locations to easily find in the future.

If your Google account is already synced with your iPhone, it will automatically appear in Google Maps. You can also sign in manually.

To sign in to your Google account,

  1. Launch Google Maps on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap the Menu icon in the upper left corner. It looks like three stacked lines.
  3. Tap Choose an account.
  4. Tap your Google Account and sign in.
  5. If you don’t see your Google account listed, tap Add account.
  6. Enter your Google account email or phone number.
  7. Tap Next.
  8. Enter your Google account password.
  9. Tap Next.

You’ll be logged in and ready to go.

What you need to use navigation

  • Turn on GPS
  • Let Google Maps access your current location and audio speakers

Start or stop navigation

  1. Open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. Search for a place or tap it on the map.
  3. In the bottom right, tap Directions. It’ll show a car, bus, bike, a person waving, or a person walking.
  4. Optional: To add additional destinations, go to the top right and tap More More and then Add stop. You can add up to 9 stops. When you are finished, tap Done.
  5. Choose one of the following:
    • Driving: Driving
    • Walking: Walking
    • Cycling: Cycling
  6. If alternate routes are available, they will be shown in grey on the map. To follow an alternate route, tap the grey line.
  7. To start navigation, tap Start Start. If you see “Searching for GPS,” your phone is trying to get a GPS signal. For example, you might be in or near a tunnel, parking garage, or other location where there’s no GPS signal.
  8. To stop or cancel navigation, drag up from the bottom and tap Exit.

Hear voice directions

When you navigate to a place, you can hear voice directions. To adjust the volume of voice directions, use the volume buttons on your phone while directions are being spoken.

Note: When connected to CarPlay or Bluetooth, use your car’s volume controls to change the volume of voice directions.

Change the volume level

Step 1: Raise the volume on your phone

After you start navigation on your iPhone or iPad, press the volume buttons to raise the media volume.

Step 2: Raise Google Maps navigation volume

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  2. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Navigation settings.

    • Mute Mute.

    • Sound Sound. You’ll hear updates and turn-by-turn directions.

Fix voice navigation problems

Hear directions through your phone instead of Bluetooth

Bluetooth devices don’t always connect easily. If you’re having trouble hearing Maps instructions through your Bluetooth speakers, play Maps audio through your phone’s speakers instead. You can choose which speakers to use in Google Maps settings.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, turn off Bluetooth.
  2. Open the Google Maps app Google Maps.
  3. Tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Navigation settings.
  4. Turn off Play voice over Bluetooth.
