Artificial Intelligence has supplanted blockchain and cryptocurrency as the startup industry tech workers are most interested in joining, according to a new report from AngelList, a U.S.-based platform that connects startups with investors.
Machine Learning & Artificial Intelligence was the top industry coveted in 2018 by the 8 million job seekers registered on the platform’s job board, AngelList Talent, the company announced Thursday.
“The amount of users searching for positions in AI was one of the biggest surprises of the year,” says Amit Matani, AngelList Talent’s CEO. “Another surprise was the decline of the Crypto Boom.”
San Francisco led the charge this year in AI, boasting over 2,000 artificial-intelligence-focused startups featured on AngelList Talent, which is more than double the number in any other city.
Though excitement about blockchain and cryptocurrency skyrocketed in 2017 as it minted a number of overnight billionaires from their investments, “it’s definitely died down significantly,” Matani told Forbes.“It didn’t turn out to be the new Wild West people thought it would be.”
Blockchain and crypto now rank sixth among the industries job seekers were interested in. Data & analytics ranked second behind AI, followed by social good startups, consumer companies and healthcare.
Within these top industries, however, it isn’t only engineering and coding positions that startups and job seekers are after, says Matani.
In New York, for example, one of the most in-demand skills is sales, with more advertising startups on AngelList Talent than any other city.
AngelList Talent, a recruiting ground for Amazon, Facebook and Stripe, among other top tech companies, hosted 138,000 job listings in 2018, up 70% over 2018, the company says. The site is a startup job board similar to Hired, Vettery and Underdog, though AngelList claims to have the world’s largest pool of startup talent.
According to the company’s report, more than 45,000 startups created new job listings on the site this year, and 92,000 additional companies joined the platform in search of fresh talent.
